COPY EDITING AND SUBEDITING
Newspapers, magazines, websites, PhD theses, promotional materials, grant proposals...
Editing a text involves a few different factors: the easy bits (spelling, punctuation, grammar, house style), the bits that really matter to the average reader (flow, accuracy, readability, consistency, layout) and the boring bits (making sure all the quote marks look the same).
I'm good at all that and I enjoy it. I spent two years as a full-time subeditor for the magazines Research Europe and Research Fortnight, and have done freelance editing for clients including The Guardian, The Non-League Football Paper, Litro Magazine and Latinlover Publishing.
OTHER EDITORIAL TASKS
I'm a commissioning editor for SAM Learning and a writer for Research and KEEO. I've also done Dutch-English translation for Amnesty International and have held various editorial all-rounder roles, including at The Open University. Feel free to contact me with any left-field requests.
On paper or online, I'm happy to proof any type of text. I know all the symbols and I've dragged my handwriting up to the required standard. I have done proofreading for clients including Bradt Travel Guides and ZigZag Education.
“I have worked with Martyn since 2013; for two years in our London office as subeditor for our online and printed content, and lately as a regular freelance subeditor. During that time, his love of the English language and staunch defence of its correct use has always been apparent. His work is accurate and timely and his willingness to take on any task is refreshing. Martyn does not leave a job half done. He is an excellent subeditor and a reliable and helpful freelancer. I would recommend him.”
Dr Kristina Pedder, Chief Subeditor, Research Ltd (Publisher of Research Europe, Research Fortnight and
Research Professional), London
“Martyn worked as a copy editor for our publishing house and corrected several leaflets and other promotional texts. His useful corrections and suggestions greatly improved the texts. We would highly recommend him for similar assignments.”
Puntoaparte Bookvertising, Bogotá
“I am very happy that Martyn proofread my PhD thesis. He was incredibly quick and accurate, and helped me to make a well-flowing story in spite of the inevitable jargon.”
Lies Wijnterp, Author of Making Borges: The Early Reception of Jorge Luis Borges's Work in France and the United States, Radboud University Nijmegen
“Martyn has carried out freelance editorial tasks for SAM for over three years, editing and laying out online revision activities for school pupils. He is a very fast operator who always meets deadlines and adapts quickly to different activities and ways of working. He works independently but communicates well with the rest of the team, and he has helped to improve the quality and quantity of our content.”

Hello! Allow me to entertain you (to some very small extent) with a short autobiography.
I grew up near Manchester, England, and have lived in a few places: Nottingham, Jena and Vienna (all to learn German), London (where I spent five years in publishing), Amsterdam (where I learned to ride a bike) and now Haarlem (which is between Amsterdam and the sea).
Along the way I've gained experience of various editorial roles and am happy to consider any relevant assignments. Copy editing (or subediting), though, is undoubtedly my favourite. Working so closely with language, ironing out any errors and making sure that the text flows and hits all the right notes at the right times is a real joy.
I have a keen interest in linguistics and I consider myself a descriptivist, which is unusual for a copy editor – but perhaps it shouldn't be. You can read more about that in my blog (coming soon).
I generally work from home, where I have a small office. I try not to fill up my weeks, partly because there's more to life and partly because I like to be available for ad hoc requests. I can usually make time for new clients, so please get in touch if you think we might be of use to each other.
